Dear battery enthusiast,

Welcome to Battery Associates’ September newsletter. We have summarised some of the month’s most relevant news, highlighting recent developments and updates in the battery space.

B.A's Battery Newsletter:

Battery Industry Highlights

In this section, we summarise relevant battery news from the past month.

On August 10, CATL temporarily halted production at its Jianxiawo lithium mine in Jiangxi, China, for at least three months, according to reports. The suspension affects affiliated refineries in nearby Yichun. The mine is a significant source of lepidolite-based lithium, contributing to China’s dominant processing position.

B.A Commentary: The mine halted production on August 10 after its mining permit expired on August 9. CATL had previously stated that it was actively pursuing the permit renewal. Following the suspension, lithium carbonate prices in China have surged. Battery-grade lithium carbonate rose 24%, from around RMB 70,000 ($9,830) per ton on August 8 to RMB 86,500 per ton on August 18, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

On August 20, CNGR entered a strategic joint venture with revomet Bitterfeld GmbH, acquiring a 25% stake to advance closed-loop recovery of nickel, cobalt, and lithium from battery scrap in Germany. Positioned at one of Europe’s most advanced recycling facilities, the collaboration combines CNGR’s pCAM expertise, revomet’s process innovation, and CRONIMET’s established European logistics to strengthen regional battery material circularity.

B.A Commentary: As Europe targets 40% self-sufficiency in strategic raw materials by 2030, this move enhances local recycling capacity and supply resilience. CNGR brings extensive experience from the Chinese market, one of the world’s leading hubs for e-mobility and battery technologies. By combining this deep technological expertise with revomet’s European recycling capabilities and CRONIMET’s global network, the partnership creates a unique knowledge and technology hub in Bitterfeld.

On July 18, Robert Bosch GmbH and Mitsubishi Corporation signed an agreement to establish a new company, Bosch MC Battery Service Innovations GmbH, as a 50:50 joint venture under EU merger regulations. Each partner will hold equal shares and exercise joint control. Headquartered in Germany, the venture will focus on developing and delivering Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) enablement solutions and consultancy services to support and optimise customers' BaaS operations.

B.A Commentary: On August 12, the EU’s approval of the Bosch–Mitsubishi joint venture under the Merger Regulation safeguards market integrity while enabling innovation in Battery-as-a-Service. As mobility platforms globalise, regulatory clearance ensures that competition remains open across the EEA. This partnership, strategically headquartered in Germany, highlights how international collaboration can align with EU oversight to advance sustainable energy and transport solutions.

On August 29, 2025, BASF delivered the first mass-produced cathode active materials (CAM) for semi-solid-state batteries to WELION New Energy. Through its joint venture BSBM (BASF Shanshan Battery Materials), BASF developed a high-nickel NCM CAM with a composite coating to address interface issues with solid electrolytes, enhancing specific energy, cycling stability, calendar life, and safety. The initiative progressed from concept to mass production within a year, beginning in August 2024.

B.A Commentary: BASF and Shanshan established the majority-owned joint venture BSBM (BASF-51%, Shanshan-49%) in May 2021 to produce CAM and precursors (PCAM) in China for next-generation EV batteries. WELION’s semi-solid-state cells use the first mass-produced high-nickel NCM CAM, featuring a composite coating as cathode, along with a reduced amount of liquid electrolyte, ultra-thin metallic lithium foil anode and ionic conductive separator. This collaboration highlights a strategic approach to overcoming challenges in scaling advanced battery technologies.

On July 17, an £8.1 million UK consortium comprising WMG at the University of Warwick, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Mint Innovation, and LiBatt Recycling announced plans to scale domestic lithium-ion battery recycling. Funded by the UK’s Advanced Propulsion Centre, the three-year project aims to recover lithium, nickel, and cobalt from EV batteries using Mint’s technology platform, strengthening onshore circular supply chains.

B.A Commentary: This £8.1M initiative, supported through the UK’s £2.5B DRIVE35 programme, highlights a coordinated effort to strengthen domestic manufacturing and critical material recovery. With backing from APC and partners like Zenzic, the project reflects a broader industrial strategy to foster innovation, enhance supply chain resilience, and advance the UK’s transition to net-zero, while supporting sustainable growth in the automotive sector.
